Demarre McGill
The Highlands Concert Series is honored to open its 2018-19 season with one of the world’s leading flutists, the celebrated Demarre McGill.
Mr. McGill has joined the Seattle Symphony Orchestra as Principal Flute following a year as Principal Flute of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, presented to the most promising soloists studying in the United States, Mr. McGill—acclaimed for his “richly saturated tone, spirited technique, and expressive warmth”—has quickly become one of the most sought-after flutists of his generation, enjoying an active career as leading soloist, recitalist, artistic director, and chamber musician.
As soloist, Mr. McGill has appeared with the Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and Buffalo Philharmonic, among others, and as chamber musician, appears regularly throughout the United States and abroad. He is a founding member of The Myriad Trio and has participated in multiple national and international chamber music festivals, including Music@Menlo, Marlboro, La Jolla, Santa Fe, Music from Angel Fire, Stellenbosch in South Africa, St. Bart’s in the Caribbean, and the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival in South Korea. In addition to his performance schedule, McGill is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Art of Élan, a chamber music organization in San Diego that exposes new audiences to classical music.
Dominating the audition circuit, Mr. McGill has served as Principal Flute of the Dallas Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Florida Orchestra, and Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, as well as Acting Principal Flute of the Pittsburgh Symphony during the 2005-06 season.
Mr. McGill’s media appearances include PBS Live From Lincoln Center performing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, A&E Network The Gifted Ones, NBC Today show, NBC Nightly News, MSNBC Melissa Harris-Perry show, and as a teenager, Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Flute Performance from The Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner, and continued his studies with Mr. Baker at the Juilliard School, where he received a Masters of Music degree. Mr. McGill, a Powell Artist, is represented by ACM 360 Artists management.
